Why didn't Vermont sign the Declaration of Independence?
According to one old Vermonter, "Didn't need to - we
was independent already!" While that may be undeniable,
the real reason was that Vermont wasn't one of the original
thirteen colonies, and held off from becoming a colony until
1791. It's said that this was because they were making sure
the notion of independence would wash before they got
taken into it, as Vermonters were never much to be dazzled by the "new-fangled."
